In case you're curious, I've been working on the adapter program that lets
Csound be controlled via MIDI messages in realtime (but with full control
over intrument parameters, unlike with Csound's own MIDI support).

To do so, I had to get the MIDI hardware on my system working again,
something I hadn't gotten around to doing since simultaneously adding an
AWE64 to the system and upgrading to Red Hat 6. Suffice it to say that
I now know a lot more about the ISA-Pnp tools than I did before, but
both the AWE64 and my MPU401 now play happily together under OpenSound.

I did notice an interesting thing though... copying directly from
/dev/midi02 (the MPU401) to /dev/midi01 (the AWE64's wavetable) didn't
work with messages generated from my Yamaha SY22 synth/keyboard. It
did work fine when piped through any of my MIDI toys filters. Some
experimentation exposed the reason for this... the AWE64 can't comprehend
running status bytes (which the SY22 generates but my filters expand
to normal repeated status bytes).

In short, could it be true that the best-selling sound card and thus
probably the single most common MIDI synth today doesn't actually support
such a simple, common, fundamental part of the MIDI standard?! Agh!

Now that this is resolved, onwards to the Csound adapter, but I probably
won't have that for you folks until Monday (simple though it is), since
I'll be away for the holiday this weekend. Shanah tovah (happy new year)
to all of you who are observing it!

Div.
