I hate to harp on this, but it doesn't require the ALSA sequencer at all
(yes, I really like the ALSA sequencer design, but it's not needed here).
You can read and write MIDI messages on any file descriptor, whether it's
an ALSA MIDI port, a pipe, or a socket. If only today's sequencers
weren't hardwired to only look at /dev/midi...
