Although I'm in the early stages of brainstorming, I think its *more*
attractive, precisely because it is totally non-destructive.

The scheme I'm hatching right now isn't quite like Crowley's "piece
table", in that I don't use a single "add buffer". Instead, any pieces
(inserts, replacements) above a certain size go into their own
file. This doesn't solve the seek problem, but it reduces it a little,
since we don't end up seeking all over the single "add" file with lots
of little pieces in them. Positioning these "add" files on the disk
will be an interesting issue.

Early days yet, however.
