AFAIK, Z-plane (as implemented by E-mu in their machines) filters are
not really a special kind of filters, but rather a way of dynamically
controlling compound filters. You could view it as a multiband
parametric EQ with resonance, where you crossfade all parameters (not
the processed audio, that is) between two different settings.

I haven't seen any documents on actual low level implementations,
but you could have a look in some E-mu programming manual for a hint
on what it does...
