I'm not sure what the technical ramifications of this are, but as I
understand it, pro studios ALWAYS run ProTools with Digidesign's DSP
hardware installed. So the heavy realtime processing is actually not
done on the general-purpose computer. The way it was described to me
at the studio I recorded at last year, ProTools hardware takes care
of all input, output, and DSP; the Mac is just there to run the
interface and the hard drives.

Because in my music, at least, there is no hard line between
experimenting and making a "real" recording. If at all possible, I'd
this to be possible. I wouldn't expect instant response to
complicated reconfigurations, but I'd hope not to have dropouts or
bad noises. This would be especially useful for live experimental
performances.
