AES/EBU, S/PDIF etc are digital interfaces and need no advanced
modulation/demodulation of the kind used in modems. They use bi-phase
modulation (or rather encoding - mixing data + clock) and similar
methods just to get it all across using a single wire or fibre.

A NIC is actually pretty similar to any high speed serial device, such
as the digital audio interfaces - the main difference is that NICs
are meant for networks rather than point-to-point connections, but
thats just a matter of some extra hardware and protocol features.
