It seems to me that once all this is done it would also open the way to direct
vstplugin hosting, which is a good thing imo.

Since you are envisaging a vstplugin host of some sort, best thing would be to
subscribe to vst-plugins list and ask. You should be able to do it via the
following link :

if you expand the "linux" entry on that page it says they have no plans
currently to port anything to Linux but they are watching the market with interest.
