Oops... Not true.

Insert "and still get the record monitor to sound exactly like the
recorded result," - you *can* of course, use the lower mixer->output
latency (ie for faster MIDI response or something) and accept that
signals originating form the audio inputs will have higher latency,
and thus, will be delayed in relation to previously recorded or real
time generated signals.
