hello LAD folks !

hope you don't mind me bringing this up again...

i still think it would have a positive effect on linux audio
development if more people became aware of this list and possibly
got involved here.

we have had this discussion before, and many people have uttered
objections to sending an announcement message around, both here on
the list and in private mail.
the main argument was that the s/n ratio might go down, which is a
very valid point IMHO.
this must absolutely be avoided.

anyway, i feel there is a lot of hacking going on in the world that
we are not aware of...
and many good programmers are not aware of the things going on here.

my suggestion:

narrow the list of recipients to
  * all major distros
  * computer music institutes

this hopefully harvests a lot of knowledge while keeping the noise
out.

please note that the list address is not mentioned in the
annoucement, so each poster has to take the extra effort to go to
the web site.

find attached a draft of the letter and a list of recipients.
please comment on both.

if the majority around here still thinks it'll do more harm than
good, i promise to forget about it and never bother you again :)

yours,

jörn

Subject: ANNOUNCE: Linux-Audio-Development Mailing List

Hello everybody!

This is an announcement to all people who are interested in the
development of audio and music-related applications for the LINUX
operating system.

The Linux-Audio-Development mailing list now has its own homepage,
offering subscription info, a FAQ, and a searchable archive. It can
be found at: http://audio.netpedia.net/lad/

We would like to encourage you to consider joining the list. Over
the course of the last year, it has become the most important forum
for Linux Audio Development, with an excellent s/n ratio and very
focused discussions.

Our goal now is to provide a common exchange point for all related
software projects, to gain new subscribers willing to share their
knowledge, and to encourage wider code reuse and cooperation.

Recent discussions include the design of a generalized plugin API
and realtime capabilities of Linux-based DAWs.

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Jörn Nettingsmeier
and Paul Winkler

Please excuse this unsolicited mail. Be assured you will receive no
further messages.

distros:
========

* redhat
* debian
* suse
* yellowdog (PPC linux)
* turbolinux

(are there other distros that are *not* based on any of the above
and do their own software development ?)

additionally: linuxcare.com ?? (they don't have their own distro,
but they do professional support and have proven to be very helpful
to the open source community so far - they host kernel traffic,
among other things..)

computer music institutes:
==========================

* ccrma/stanford univ.
* columbia computer music studio
* princeton sound kitchen
* ucsd dept. of music
* mills college
* ircam paris,france
* groupe de recherche acoustique et musicale, paris, france
* icem essen,germany
* scrime/univ. de bordeaux, france
* instituut voor sonologie, utrecht, netherlands
* university of montreal, faculté de musique... ?!
* hanns eisler hochschule für musik, berlin, germany

(a huuge list of studios can be found at
http://www.kgw.tu-berlin.de/EMDoku/Studios-D.html .
no point in writing to all of them...
i think we are better off including only those that we have
personally heard of.
so the list above is intentionally incomplete. additions are
welcome.)
