OK, thanks everyone!
I've downloaded mpg123 and it works great. A little staring at the
sox manpage yields this:

for cdda output:
mpg123 -s my_file.mp3 | sox -t .raw -swc 2 -r 44100 - my_file.cdr

or for .wav output:
mpg123 -s my_file.mp3 | sox -t .raw -swc 2 -r 44100 - my_file.wav
