iirc, the sblive cards can do this.
with alsa drivers, of course.
(this was one of the FAQs at LinuxTag as well. i used to direct
those folks to josh, because he had done this already. must've been
while you were hacking pd on my machine :) next year, we should
have a 5.1 DVD-equipped machine at out booth !)
perhaps you should ask this on alsa-dev as well, i remember reading
a couple of promising reports about 5.1 there. if you want to search
the alsa-dev archive (in case they finally managed to fix it - it
was broken after they moved the lists to sourceforge), "ac3dec"
might be a good bet. if you pull the cvs, look in the alsa-tools/
directory.
haven't tried this myself, though. i'm still trying to fully grok
the mysteries of plain old stereo :)
