one thing i often find myself doing with the displays if trying to find a
zero crossing with a specific direction (+ to - or vice versa),so that i
can make a clean xfade with another file or whatever. this would be
harder if you only had the abs of the actual data.
        if you did have only the abs data what happens when you go from
1:2 to 1:1...do you then have to go over the entire window and take the
abs, or do you just have a big jump which might be a tad disconcerting
for the user?
