Has anybody had any experience with the v_midi kernel module? It seems
like I can get it to half-duplex, but not full-duplex. Also, I'm not
sure if its timing is wonky or if I am just screwing something else wrong.

I have a RS232 to MIDI signal converter, but not a rate converter. I
actually use this to get MIDI in and out of my TRG SuperPilot (!) but it
is just talking RS232, so I figure I should be able to use it with this
laptop too. The ALSA card-serial driver doesn't even load on my system
(but that might be because I haven't moved the usual serial driver into
an unloadable kernel module). Is there anything to stop me from just
using setserial to set the UART to go at MIDI speed and setting the
/dev/midi link to point at /dev/ttyS0?

I'm totally desperate to get MIDI in working on this laptop, and
debugging the ALSA MTPAV driver is going slowly...
