its not possible with OSS, and its not possible with current
ALSA. ALSA 0.5.X had a way to do this, but I'm not sure anyone
remembers how.

what you want has been the subject of a massive amount of discussion
on LAD over the last few weeks. its no simple matter, and "we're
working on it".
