this depends on what kind of driver you use (OSS or ALSA) and of
course on the mixer program.
you must ensure that the input recorded by the mic is not played
back through the speakers. normally this is done by selecting
"record" (sometimes named capture) on the mic channel while muting
it or at last keeping the fader down. the record gain for the mic
should not be affected by this - it's controlled by a control named
"input gain" or the like, and on some cards you will find an
additional switch for "mic boost".
btw: this list is not quite the right place for such problems.
if you're using alsa, i'd recommend subscribing to alsa-user, and
for the kernel drivers, linux-sound is a good choice.
