I'd prefer running GUIs as plugins in a similar way to the DSP
plugins. This would of course require a "toolkit" (or rather input +
rendering API) that can be implemented on top of any other toolkit in
a useful way, but would mean that the GUI plugins become just as
portable as the DSP plugins.

X is not the only display target around - and it's not even
particularly well suited for heavily animated GUIs.
