Maybe not. The objective is to affect air pressure, and maybe there
are other ways of doing that that don't involve moving parts (other
than the air molecules, of course).

One example would be flame tweeters. They are composed of a flame
(usually from a burning gas) surrounded by a big electric coil.
An audio signal passed through the coil acts on the plasma (charged
particles) of the flame, and the result is audible sound. (And
exceptionally high fidelity, too.) This technology was discovered
by accident by a guy in a lab who happened to have a big coil near
a bunsen burner, and wondered where the sound was coming from!
