it will be fun :o) even if it doesnt quite work... it will
be fun, and a learning experience :o)

maybe its crazy (well, yes, it *is* pretty crazy!)... but
innovation never happens without a few crazy ideas...

yes... thats the idea - if we can get it to work... lots of
people stand to benefit from it. not everyone has access to
the sort of money that is required to set up a professional
studio... or can work at a nice big ProTools rig like the
one i was working at this morning. undoubtably, the more
expensive setups like this are much better hardware... of
course. but my own creativity is being frustrated because i
don't have gear of that level at home... i only have access
to it while i'm studying for my Ph.D. - yet my work depends
on it. so why should my lack of resources limit my ability
to compose?... ;o) i'm definately not the only one in this
position - it is the same problem facing the studio for whom
we are building this crazy piece of hard/software.

we know its not going to be "productive"... its not going to
be easy, and it may well not work...
but then again, it just might... and a lot of people will be
able to benefit from it if it does :o))).

i guess my inquiry has highlighted a divide that is
happening in the linux community - between those who are
seeking to make linux a professional software platform, and
those who use and develop linux as an alternative, because
of the free software ethos... neither of these positions are
wrong, just different focuses for different people.

absolutely! :o)
...i've been reading Naomi Klein's "No Logo" lately... which
i've found has some very interesting resonances with the
free / open source software movement...

best wishes
