Concerning the timing issues, one of the problem raised by audio transmission is the audio cards clock skew of the different stations involved in the transmission.
I've done some work on this topic. It's available as a technical report at ftp://ftp.grame.fr/pub/Documents/AudioClockSkew.pdf
