I've been thinking of this kind of thing as well. (It "hurts" to go
back from coding in SAOL to coding in C, especially since sfront
supports multiple targets.) Would it be sufficient to have the
front-end speak MIDI to an SAOL program?

BTW, where is a good tutorial on programming applications that deal with
or generate MIDI events (preferably suitable for browsing offline)?
