maybe you're not filtering enough?
i was just reading about the Ibanez TubeScreamer circuit,
its clipping stage is quite interesting.
http://www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/TStech/tsxtech.htm
There's a pair of parallel diodes in the negative feedback
loop (rather than across the output), and there's
a cap and resistor in series from the neg. input to ground
forming a highpass filter (that is, there's less negative
feedback from high freqs so the circuit gets higher gain
at high freqs).
The filter is at about 750 Hz.
