the links paul w posted give a lot of info, one about an
lxh2 marshall/fender simulator (i think, sp?) and the other
about the ibanez tube screamer.

from my spice investigations, i doubt you can get a real
valve sound from solid state electronics, the way it shapes
the signal is quite unique. you probably could do this
with opamps too but the circuit would get complicated enough
to outnoise and outcost a single valve circuit. i may be
wrong though, i'm no EE.
