yes, its an app-specific question.

present: ardour can't hook up the side chains in any useful way, sort of

future: such plugins would be inserted into a patch bay-like object,
and connected to from there using wires or something similar.

between time: you could always use jackrack or some similar tool, put
the plugin there, and connect "by hand" from within ardour. you'd
create a port insert in the relevant audio track to send/return the
audio to the compressor, then connect whatever you want to the side
chain ports of the compressor. port inserts add latency, however.
