Glad to see I'm not the only person who thinks this is the way to go. I've
been working on an implementation of this sort of thing for quite some time.
My original work ended up getting off-track and turning into something very
similar to pd. Thankfully, I discovered pd, and redirected my energies.
Really, this is just going back to an older way of doing things. When the
only thing available was an ultra-expensive 4-track tape recorder, you got
around the limitations by bouncing 4 tracks to 2 or 1. The downsides were
audio degradation and the loss of flexibility. Neither of this disadvantages
exist with computer based systems, but all of the advantages do.
What I'm envisioning is a system which is based on a hierarchal tree
structure, rather than a linear row of faders with buses. I have a sf.net
project going (Tinara), but the only thing in CVS is an HTML document called
"scratchpad", which is like a huge disorganized notebook with scattered
ramblings. The only real reason for the project at this point was to
publicly document some of the ideas with a 3rd-party timestamp. Now I see
that your message provides some documentation even earlier than mine :)
