If you need simple and functional code you should try RtAudio
( http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~gary/rtaudio/ ) which can handle multiple APIs
(as PortAudio does: ALSA, OSS, Jack, Mac CoreAudio, Win DS and ASIO) in a
very simple way. You can switch between blocking mode or callback one.

PortAudio is maybe an equivalent choise except for the fact that it is in
development in the more interesting release (v19. v18 does not support ALSA
and Jack).
