thanks. a hardcopy of this posting will forever be tacked to the
wall behind my screen!

my first attempt at using the vp patches ended due to frequent
crashes in x11 without using jack at all, but then i found i had
also enabled a new 3d module which was probably faulty. will try
again rsn - i need a running jackd for a lesson i'm giving later
today, but after that it's blood-and-gore-and-kernel-patch time :)
