Both of you are right albeit in different contexts.

situations where "monofying" a stereo signal changes the overall
percepcion of the signal.
To give a scenario where this could happen anyway:
P == Producer
E == Engineer
P: We need some bad weather here ..
E: Got it, here is some bad-ass thunder
P: On target! Can you widen it to get out of the way from dialogue?

P: Keep it there! This is excacatly what I meant!! Only that ...

Your faked stereo in will work perfectly with a monocompatible mix. Like
Conga near one side and the bongo close by. And afterall, isn't this
where a plate shows its bright side :)
