You can't get worse than class-A (for power efficiency). Maybe the ideal
solution is a passive attenuator between the amp and the speaker, using
big variable resistors as you can see in picturese of in Einstein's lab :-)
A purist's solution could be to replace the speaker's permanent magnet by
a regulated DC-powered one...
