when it gets down to doing something as simple as mangle a few samples or implement a filter, C is almost as concise as python/ruby/perl, and multiples faster. there are projects for both python and ruby that will compile to C code, however, if youre afraid to make the jump.. i'm guessing the code they generate is about as pleasing as something out of Microsoft FrontPage is to a seasoned CSS expert, though..
