That's the rationale for having exponential volume controls. In the case
of a release profile, it's rather because many real sounds produced by
resonating physical things (so-called intruments :-) die out exponentially.
But that is only the simplest case. Once you couple e.g. a string to a
soundboard, what you get is usually a sum of exponentials with different
time constants. AMS has a module that emulates this.

A good way to produce natural sounding envelopes is not the 'construct'
the envelope, but to see it as the output of a filter operating on a
trigger or gate signal.
