Or the (usually soft) clipping can inside the filter itself.
This happens e.g. in the 'Moog ladder' filter, where the signal
dependent emitter impedances of the transistor pairs act as the
resistors in a series of four simple RC filters.
The soft clipping that results follows a tanh() law.
