looks like some other problem with pd, I get this starting it as root:

$ sudo pd -jack
the maximum buffer size is now 32
the sample rate is now 48/sec
engine sample rate: 48
cannot complete execution of the processing graph (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
audio I/O stuck... closing audio

any more ideas?
