just to add to the previous suggestions - if you want to use a simple
graphical waveform editor then wavesurfer is very quick and easy to use.

there are others as well - ive just compiled audacity ( havent used it
yet ), and have used snd, which seems to be great for editing but not so
strong on recording in the first place. ( i also use ecasound but that
is a command line tool and i think the last poster already mentioned
that).
