hi all
thanks for the help with my thinkpad600E....
i've changed my modules.conf as suggested, which has helped a lot - remov=
ed=20
all the unresolved symbol errors. but i'm still having problems with=20
modprobe:

[root_AT_hamish miriam]# modprobe snd-cs4236
/lib/modules/2.5.9/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.o: init_module: No =
such=20
device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, includi=
ng=20
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.5.9/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.o=20
failed
modprobe: insmod snd-cs4236 failed

im sure the settings must be right (especially as they're copied from ano=
ther=20
thinkpad user!)

further exploration shows /proc/interrupts is a bit strange... i cant see=
 the=20
sound card there at all:

 14: 63932 XT-PIC ide0
 15: 4 XT-PIC ide1
NMI: 0
LOC: 0

a check of /proc/devices is as follows:

Character devices:
  1 mem
  2 pty/m%d
  3 pty/s%d
  4 tts/%d
  5 cua/%d
  6 lp
