yes. i dual-boot windoze 98 and mandrake 8.2, and strangely my win98 Device
Manager lists sound as irq 9... this resolved all the insmod errors i was
getting before... although i just tried irq 5 and i have the same result...
no sound still, but no insmod errors either...

ok.... here's the result of the various things you gave me to try....
i'm also running 2.5.9 kernel with alsa built in, thats where i started from,
so i'll reboot and give you the results of running the same commands on it
too...

err... no.... this is where things start to look seriously wrong...
