Subject: [linux-audio-user] sound with Debian on laptop: problem #1

Greetings:

I've successfully installed Debian 2.2 rv5 on an HP Omnibook 4150.
Everything works when running as normal user, except sound. For example,
when I try running gmix I receive an error dialog that states:

        No mixers found.
Make sure you have sound support compiled into the kernel.

However, it runs fine if I log into X as root. Ditto for the CD player.
Obviously I don't want to run as root, so how can I use sound devices in
Debian as a normal user ? All suggestions vastly appreciated... :)

Best regards,
