For the record: I keep *all* my downloaded sources in a directory
tree starting at ~/Downloads ... including ALSA sources.
I've never had a problem building or installing alsa from there,
and I've been using ALSA on and off since the 0.5.x days.
The only sources I ever put in the /usr heirarchy are the linux
kernel sources, which I put in /usr/src/linux like everybody else
does.
