I know everything that you mentioned. I think Debian is awesome.
If I was administering someone elses machine I would definately do that. The thing is I wanted to do the LFS thing but did not want to leave a package management system behind. With out anykind of package management maintaining my system would be way to demanding.

To me all linux distros are the same.
