If this is still on Mandrake 9.0 you are dealing with devfs and devfsd
(device file system and device file system daemon). These create,
delete, and change permissions / ownership on files in /dev as side
effects of initializing device drivers or lookups of specific filenames
by programs. The exact details are highly configurable.
What happens if you ask the alsa "aconnect" utility to list output
devices, i.e., "aconnect -o -l" ???
The devfs FAQ at
http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/linux/docs/devfs.html
may be helpful. Also the article at
http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/l-fs4.html
(parts 4, 5, 6) is useful background. (Thanks to Jonathan Kraut for
suggesting this link to me recently on this very list.)
