Is it possible your old kernel has DMA off for the CD-ROM and the new kernel
has DMA on? It is pretty common for IDE CD devices to claim they are DMA
capable, but not work properly in Linux when DMA is enabled. You probably
would want to use the "hdparm" utility to check this.
