i had a quite similar problem with muse, i think, there are different
versions of muse-binaries out there either compiled with support for
alsa *or* for jack, AFAIK, there is no commandlineoption to start muse
for jacksupport (such as: muse --jack ) but to type:

#muse --help

wont hurt anyway ;-)

i use thacs muse.rpm for Mandrake 9.1 and as i run it setuid root
without any serious trouble. (muses jacksupport is, in a word: excellent
:-) )

if you compile muse from its sources, it should be possible to turn on
jacksupport by giving the appropriate flag to configure.
