i wasn't clear in the above: timidity won't load the whole
instruments IF the MIDI file doesn't need them all. all the required
instrumets will be loaded, of course (if -j is given).

oh this version is way TOOOO old.
check timidity.sf.net and its cvs repository.
the recent one uses the gauss interpolation as default, and the chorus
and reverb effects are improved. but it eats lots of CPU power when
large number of voices are played.
now, not only the effects but the interpolation algorithm can be
chosen via an option (even on the fly, too).
