I get the impression that Apple is working with the GNU folk on the above
system though

It would be in their best interests to open up development to the rest of the
world. You never know what may happen in the future.
I may build a machine to run this system... It looks like it may have a lot of
potential. It's a sort of "best of all possible technologies" thing.

The easiest way is just to set up apt and point it at planet CCRMA.
