I think it would depend on how the card hardled 24bit data, but running
jack at 16 might be safer, as JACK has a known float -> 16 bit algorithm.

[ actually the current, undithered float -> 16bit algorithm is broken, it
  produces clicks with certain input, I fixed it in CVS, but theres not
  been a release for a while ]
