This ties into my primary reason for preferring forums: scalability of
involvement. You can just be an anonymous cruiser, posting
occasionally if at all. Or you can have an account and get email
notification of every new message in a thread you're involved in. You
don't have to totally immerse yourself to get involved.

On technical merits I think it's mostly a matter of personal
preference, but I think a forum is objectively more amenable to a
casual reader than mailing lists en masse.
