The window pops up, and you can play with the effects settings, but:
 - I also don't have an Effector in my menu.
 - I have no Preset menu.

Check out the screenshot: http://danharper.org/creox.png

I've tried compiling with no 'make install', make install with
prefix=/usr/local and make install with prefix=/usr/local/creox. I'm
too scared to run make install with prefix=/usr as it might mess with my
box.

I think it may be some crusty KDE/installation problem, which is what
the author has alluded to in an e-mail:

It seems that your creox is not properly installed.
Have you typed 'make install' after 'make'?

I don't like KDE (been burnt before), so that's where I stop trying ;)

It's OK though, Nando is on the case to get a nice fluffy RPM
happening. He'll be able to sort it out a lot quicker than what it
would take me to fix.
