I had a very similar problem after rebuilding my computer. The answer
turned out to be that there's a recording device selected, and in my
case I was trying to record "line" and the device selected was "mic".

If you go into kmix and select the "input" tab, one of the devices
will have a pink dot under it instead of a red dot. Make sure that's
the one your guitar is plugged into.
