yeah, that pretty much sums it up - i found a pretty hardcore article
which spells out not only very compelling reasons to switch to linux
from a user perspective, but from a social and political one as well ...

this is for the conspiracy nuts amongst us (me included):

http://www.machinehasnoagenda.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-339.html

for me, it was stuff like microsoft messenger, media player etc that got
me looking into linux - those "programs" are like viruses ... i don't
know how many times windows media player (and various audio cd's)
installed DRM software without my permission.

then, when i switched to linux, i was disappointed to discover that
audio work was going to be something of a *chore* ... especially when
i'd accidently wiped about four years worth of recorded music in the
process of switching (man, do i backup like a madman now!). but then i
was pleased to discover that, with a little/lot of study and hard work,
you could actually do almost ANYTHING with linux. it's FUN to get stuff
working on this thing. i fear now that i can only get my cheapies from
making stuff work, not actually working it :)

anyway, that's my perspective on windows progs on linux ...
