update: got xjadeo compiled.
got video converted to the required format (easily scripted with mencoder).
in ardour: set positional sync to "Sync with JACK".
now the xjadeo video window just goes instantly to wherever the ardour
playback cursor is -- forward, backward, dragging the playhead, whatever.
it's simple and brilliant.
