most of what I need are provided with recent versions, I had to build my

Of course ! I use it because it is easily and highly customizable as the
apps are mostly compiled and then match exactly your hardware.
The genkernel utility is cool if you are a beginner into kernel compilation.
Gentoo has the best stability so far with my USB soundcard, after having
tested the DeMuDi, the AudioSlack and the Planet CCRMA with Fedora core 3.
